Uncut 911 recording shows nurse's refusal to perform CPR
An elderly woman died Feb. 26 after a nurse at her Bakersfield retirement home refused to perform CPR. According to the recorded 911 call, a staff nurse called to report that an 87-year-old woman living at Glenwood Gardens retirement home had collapsed in the dining room with breathing problems.

I just wonder if this woman was really a nurse. Â Often people in care giving situations say they are nurses when they are just an aide or care giver. Â I would also wonder about this patients wishes. Â Did she want to have CPR done? Â At 87 she most likely would not survive intact but become an invalid in a nursing home with no mental abilities. Â I know that my dad does not want this done and he is only 84. Â
I find it sad that this happened and the woman passed away for lack of care.  It goes to show that if you have a loved one in a retirement facility you need to know what their policies are about giving life saving measures.  The woman most likely will not face charges because of the policy and because you are not required to do CPR on anyone.  It sounded like most of the on-lookers were senior citizens and they could not do CPR either.  If they had tried, they would probably have collapsed as well and then you have two people down and no one helping.  Or if they got hurt, they might sue the facility for allowing them to try and help.  It is a big can of worms!
It will be interesting to hear what the family has to say about all of this. Â Hopefully they do know what the patient wanted and that was followed. Â
Double WOW - a nurse unwilling to help a person live - sounds like she needs to find a new profession but will more than likely face charges on this one and won't have to worry about being a nurse any longer - would you want her caring for you in any medical situation? She put policy above human life - FAIL
WOW.... all those people to stand around and wait for help, i dont care if you have to quit your job to perform CPR on the person in need.  SHE WAS LYING THERE DYING,  every person who was not willing to help out by performing CPR should go get a telemarketing job!!!  I am absolutely appalled by every one of you.  think to your self you are doing something but can not take any action because of what?  a rule?  I bet if your son or daughter was lying there you would have used  two or three phones to call 911.  Â
