EUGENE, Ore. -- Greta Sangder can't take her daughter Emily to a restaurant without also worrying about taking a trip to the hospital.

"When she was about 2 and a half she was given a tiny little bite of peanut butter," Sangder said, "and within about two minutes she got really sick."

Peanut allergies can cause severe illness, including vomiting, heart palpitations and even cardiac arrest.

That's what people like LIsa Ghandour and her son Ali, who has a peanut allergy, face every day.

"Always thinking about what he's touching, try to teach him to not touch his face or eyes," Ghandour said. "We don't eat out very often."

How do restaurants keep customers safe? KVAL News asked Cafe Yumm how they handle peanuts. The restaurant uses a separate cutting board and a separate knife for peanuts, keeping even traces of peanut away from other foods.
