SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- The HIV Alliance's needle exchange program collects used needles from drug users at different anonymous drop off sites around Eugene and provides clean needles to those who sign up confidentially in their program.

On Monday June 1, the HIV Alliance is holding a forum at the Springfield Public Library from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on a proposal to expand the needle exchange into Springfield.

Critics argue this helps or even promotes drug use.

People at HIV Alliance say their ultimate goal is to lower the spread of disease.

Serenity Lane, a non-profit drug rehabilitation center in Eugene, says that although the needle exchange does not coincide with their philosophy, it does not mean there is not a place for it and that it is just a different avenue to fight the problems associated with drugs.
