EUGENE, Ore. -- Should parents be worried about the swine flu while kids are trick-or-treating?

Officials at the Lane County Health Department said the virus can live on candy bar wrappers for several hours.

The flu is also airborn and can be dangerous to kids.

Before trick-or-treaters eat their goodies. They should first unwrap a piece of candy, throw away the wrapper and then wash their hands before handling the treat.

If you're giving out candy, do not let kids put their hand in the candy bowl.

"If you are the trick-or-treat hostess and you offer it to the kids, you might want to give the kids the candy rather than let them or choose," said Dr. Sarah Hendrickson, Lane County public health officer.

The H1N1 flu is the only flu in the area right now. If your child is feeling sick, health officials say trick or treating should wait until next year.

"Don't give the flu to someone else," Hendrickson. "I'm sorry kids if you have the flu on the 31st, you don't get to trick or treat. You'll have to share with your friends and your brothers and sisters."
