"Rubes" cartoonist visits Eugene this week
By KVAL Web Staff
Two dairy farmers engage in a calcium-rich squirt gun fight. Mother Goose derives inspiration from a cow jumping over a nude sunbather. Where does this stuff come from? And how did it wind up in over 400 newspapers worldwide? You can ask Leigh Rubin, creator of the syndicated Rubes comic strip, when he visits Eugene in October. Tune in to KVAL news at noon Wednesday to see anchor Shelley Kurtz interview Rubin.
The name of Rubin's talk? "A Twisted Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste." Rubes cartoons also appear on t-shirts, coffee mugs and greeting cards, which originally sparked Rubin's decision to cartoon.
Rubin established Rubes Publications in 1979 to distribute his own greeting cards. He began publishing Notable Quotes in 1981. His cartoons first appeared in newspapers in 1984, and the first paperback collection of Rubes was published in 1988. Originally self-syndicated, Creators Syndicate now represents Rubin's cartoon. Rubes is a regular feature in SkyWest’s United Express, Delta Connection and American Southeast Airlines magazines. Rubes appears in major daily metropolitan papers such as the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, the Winnipeg Free Press, the Washington Times, the Sacramento Bee, the Houston Chronicle, the Orange County Register, and the Los Angeles Daily News. Leigh is married and has three sons.

EUGENE, Ore. -- A self-help book inspires a dog to cut the leash.
Then head for the University of Oregon campus Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., where Rubin will be the guest of the Oregon Daily Emerald newspaper in room 100 in Willamette Hall.
“It was 1978, and I was walking through the card section of a pharmacy,” Rubin said. “I just stopped in my tracks, looked at the cards and thought, 'Wait a minute. I can do that.’”
