COOS BAY, Ore. - Crews responded to 7 ATV accidents, including one fatal crash, over the Memorial Day weekend at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area near Winchester Bay and North Bend.

Kristen Schroeder, 22, of Graham, Wash., died when she was hit by another ATVer performing a jump in the Boxcar Hill area of the dunes.

CPR was started on Schroeder at the scene. She was transported to Bay Area Hospital by Bay Cities Ambulance, where she died.

The other rider was not injured. Both riders were wearing safety helmets.

In a crash Friday afternoon, a 15-year-old North Bend girl suffered a possible back injury after crashing into a "witch's eye" - a deep ravine or depression in the sand. Medics found her unresponsive when they arrived at a campground. She was wearing a helmet.
