ALBANY, Ore. - One person died in a fire at an apartment complex Wednesday morning.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.

Albany Fire Department and Albany Police Department are investigating the cause of the fire.

A passerby saw the smoke from the Pacific overpass around 6:41 a.m. and called in the fire.

Fire crews could see flames and smoke coming out of the top story of the building as they arrived on scene at 417 SE 6th Ave.

Seven people were evacuated from the building. Firefighters called the Red Cross to assist the displaced occupants of the apartments.

The fire did an estimated $300,000 in damage.
