Fire truck back from blaze catches fire in station

ALVADORE, Ore. - Firefighters think smoldering wheat from a field fire Tuesday afternoon could be to blame for a fire engine catching fire and burning back at the station.

Officials speculate that smoldering embers hitched a ride on the engine back to the Alvadore fire station, then ignited the truck.

A second theory involves an equipment failure.

The fire engine alone could cost $250,000 to replace.

No one was hurt during the blaze. No one was at the station, run entirely by volunteers, when the fire borke out.

Two other Lane Rural fire station crews responded to the fire.

The Oregon State Fire Marshall is investigating the cause of the blaze.

Heavy black smoke filled the station causing damage. Firefighters saved some of the equipment by driving it out of the building. Fans blew out the smoke from the building late into the night.

The equipment and building does need to be cleaned before being used again.

The department's fire chief said there will be no impact on the response in the district because other fire stations in the district can respond while this station is being cleaned and repaired.
