Fire truck destroyed by fire inside fire station
EUGENE, Ore. - It's not something you hear every day: A fire station on fire.
It happened Tuesday night at the Alvadore Fire Station near Junction City.
The fire destroyed one fire engine. The 1980 engine is a backup that is used for grass and field fires. | Photo Gallery
Other trucks in the station were also damaged by heat and smoke. The engine was out on a field fire earlier in the day. Lane Rural Fire Chief Dale Borland tells KVAL News that leftover wheat could have been smoldering in the engine and caused the fire, or it could have been an equipment problem.
The State Fire Marshal's office is investigating the fire. Borland says Lane Rural firefighters will still be able to cover the community.
"Our overall objective is to get the facility back up and running," Borland said. "We will keep our area covered out there. I don't want folks in the community to be nervous about that."
Chief Borland says a new fire engine would cost anywhere from $350,000 to $500,000.
