GATES, Ore. - State police charged a resident of a house destroyed by fire Aug. 30 with arson after an Oregon State Police arson and explosives detective determined the fire was intentionally set by the man.

Daniel Tobias McKinney, 47, faces one count of first degree arson for the Aug. 30 fire in Gates along Oregon's Highway 22.

The fire was reported at 6:26 p.m. The first firefighters on scene encountered heavy fire and smoke, and firefighters from nearby agencies joined the fight. After an hour, firefighters brought the blaze under control, but the home is considered a total loss.

The investigation determined the fire was incendiary and intentional and identified McKinney, who had rented a room at the home for two months, as a suspect, police said Tuesday.
