NEWPORT, Ore. - A man suspected in two armed robberies at the Rite Aid Pharmacy was taken into custody Friday as police acted on a tip.
From a police press release
A suspect wanted in connection with two Newport-area robberies was arrested Friday morning by Newport police and detectives from the Lincoln Interagency Narcotics Team.
The arrest occurred when officers served a search warrant at the man's Lincoln City-area residence and uncovered evidence connecting him to the March and July Rite Aid pharmacy robberies.
An undisclosed amount of Oxycontin was taken during both robberies.
Acting on a citizen's tip, investigators served a search warrant September 10, 2010 at a residence in the 200 block of La Fiesta Drive in Lincoln City where DONALD DANIEL LABAR, age 21, was taken into custody on charges related to the March 10th and July 11th robberies at the Newport Rite Aid Pharmacy located at 2336 N. Coast Highway.
On March 10, 2010 at about 8:00 p.m., Newport police responded to a call from Rite Aid Pharmacy that a male subject had entered the pharmacy, brandished a handgun and demanded Oxycontin before leaving with the drugs. Newport police investigated the robbery, collecting witness statements, evidence, fingerprints, and video surveillance.
On July 11, 2010 at about 6:00 p.m. a male subject again entered the Newport Rite Aid Pharmacy brandishing a handgun and demanded Oxycontin. After the subject left, Newport police were called and started an investigation into the second robbery.
As part of the investigations, detectives compared similarities in both Newport Rite Aid robberies, as well as other robberies around the state. Investigators determined the suspect in the Newport robberies had similar methods, clothing, and mannerisms. Investigators were able to develop information that led to a suspect.
On September 10, 2010 at about 8:30 a.m. a search warrant was executed at a Coronado Shores residence in the 200 block of La Fiesta Driver. Inside the home investigators found items specific to the Rite Aid robberies.
LABAR was arrested and lodged in the Lincoln County Jail on the following charges:
* two counts of Robbery in the First Degree
* two counts of Menacing
* two counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon
* two counts of Pointing a Firearm at Another
* two counts of Unlawful Possession of Schedule II Drugs
