Schmidt was drafted into Vietnam and served in combat for one year. His experiences in Vietnam led him to become involved with Veterans for Peace. He is also active in the Truth in Recruiting Movement and is a trained counselor for the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training program (ASIST).
