Eugene Police: Two shooters fired 'at least 12 to 15 rounds'

EUGENE, Ore. -- Eugene Police Violent Crimes detectives said somewhere between 12 to 15 rounds were fired outside of Aminata's Bar and Grill early Saturday morning.

According to Police, a 21-year-old Portland area man was shot at about 1 A.M. outside the bar and grill at 460 Willamette Street in Eugene. He was transported to a Lane County hospital where he is being treated for a non-life-threatening bullet wound.

Police say the incident happened during an organized rap concert and many of those inside the bar were from Portland. 

According to police, the 21-year old man was standing outside of the bar smoking a cigarette when a group of seven to 12 men gathered on an nearby sidewalk.  Police say that's when one of the males in the group opened fire with a handgun hitting the victim at least once.

Police said they do not know the motive for the shooting at this time.

Immediately after the victim was shot, a second shooter, who was also standing on Aminata's porch, returned fire toward the group on the sidewalk.

According to witnesses, that's when both sides began firing back and forth between each other. Witnesses who were inside Aminata's said everyone inside heard the shots, screamed, and instinctively hit the floor.

Within just a few seconds several bullets had hit surrounding businesses including the Oregon Electric Station. Other stray bullets hit parked cars and surrounding buildings.

Eugene Police Violent Crimes Detective Jeff Donaca said he's surprised that no one other than the 21-year-old man was hit by the stray bullets.

Witnesses said dozens of people packed into Aminata's for the rap concert and that everyone was 'pretty shaken up' by the shooting. KVAL spoke with several witnesses and surrounding business owners.

All witnesses requested not to be identified but one surrounding business owner said she thinks one of the suspects broke through a back door of their business in an attempt to exit the building. The business owner said the suspect left a trail of blood on the floor.

Police said it is possible that the second shooter ran through the back door of Aminata's but declined to comment further on how they believe the suspects escaped.

Police said they didn't know if either or the shooters knew each other or if the second shooter knew the 21-year-old victim. Police said the incident may not be completely random and they are not ruling out the possibility the shooting was gang related.

Police said they have not made any arrests in the case. They said they are looking for the two shooters who are considered armed and dangerous.

Police interviewed dozens of people and detectives are working to piece together what happened and who was responsible.

According to a Eugene Police Department release, it is believed that the first shooter was associated with a green Caprice-style car that had chrome spoked wheels and narrow tires.

Police say the first shooter is described as a black male wearing a red and black checkered shirt and matching "Fargo-style" cap with ear flaps.

Police said they do not have a description of the second shooter.

EUGENE, Ore. -- Police blocked off the 400-block of Willamette Street Saturday morning after a gunshot wound incident in the early morning hours.  Police are not confirming the number of shots fired or any information on a suspect.  According to the Eugene Police Log, officers responded just after 1 A.M. to 460 Willamette Street. 

Various buildings in the surrounding area have visible bullet holes, including the Oregon Electric Station, Aminata's Bar and Grill and even the roof of a parked car.  

Witnesses at Aminata's Bar and Grill say they heard the gunshots, heard screaming, and got down on the floor.
