DAMASCUS, Ore. (AP) — Damascus councilors voted Tuesday to hang copies of the Declaration of Independence and part of the Oregon Constitution in a prominent place in the council chambers.

The Oregonian reports the issue came up when new Mayor Steve Spinnett suggested placing a plaque in City Hall with a section of the constitution proclaiming that all power is inherent in the people who have the right to alter or abolish government.

During Tuesday's meeting, councilors decided to add the declaration and hang both documents in the council chambers.
