Group supports 'Civic Village' concept with signs

EUGENE, Ore. - Signs encouraging Eugene to "Support the Y at Civic" popped up this spring as the school board debated what to do with the historic property.
The discussion has been set aside until later this summer, but now a second set of signs are popping up around Eugene that read "The Fred Meyer, Civic Village Option of Choice."
Mike Weber and a group of supporters put together the signs to show their support for a proposed Fred Meyer store and apartment complex on the current Civic Stadium site.
Earlier this year the Eugene 4J School District tabled discussion of what to do with the property, but Weber says his group wants to keep its message out there.
"Bring some awareness, make people wonder why do other people want this," said Weber. "Maybe they'll look into it and realize this is more than just throwing another retail store up."
Other options discussed for Civic include saving the historic stadium or turning it into a YMCA.
Weber says the group will be handing out free signs on Tuesday but are still settling on a location.
