Man, 20, drowns on Oregon Coast

CAPE LOOKOUT STATE PARK, Ore. - A 20-year-old man died Monday afternoon after he struggled in the surf at Cape Lookout State Park and was later pulled out by emergency responders.

Zane Thomas Gualke, 20, of Hermiston, Ore., was pronounced deceased after being transported to Tillamook County General Hospital.

According to Oregon State Police (OSP) Sergeant Greg Plummer, on July 25, 2011 at approximately 2:01 p.m. emergency personnel responded to a reported water rescue at Cape Lookout State Park.

Gualke was visiting the state park as part of a youth group trip when he started to struggle in the ocean surf while playing 70-75 yards off shore in the water with three other people.

The others tried to help but became fatigued and lost sight of him.

A few minutes after arriving on scene, Tillamook County Detective Yvonne Garcia and two unidentified park employees waded into the surf and pulled him from the water.

Gualke was unconscious and efforts to revive him at the scene were unsuccessful.

Tillamook Ambulance transported him to Tillamook County General Hospital where resuscitation efforts continued until he was pronounced deceased at 3:35 p.m.

Assisting OSP with the investigation and scene response were Tillamook County Sheriff's Office, Netarts Fire & Rescue, Tillamook Ambulance, Oregon State Parks and Recreation employees, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
