Update

PORTLAND, Ore. - Former University of Oregon Ducks star quarterback Joey Harrington was struck by a SUV and seriously injured while he rode his bike on Sunday evening, a Portland Police spokesman said.

Among other injuries, Harrington has a broken collarbone and punctured lung. He spent the night in the intensive care unit.

Harrington was riding along SE Foster Road near 88th Avenue just before 8:30 p.m. when he was hit from behind by a passing Toyota RAV4, Lt. Robert King said.

KATU Sports Director Katy Brown talked with a member of Harrington's family on Monday, who said he suffered serious injuries but is expected to recover.

Officers said the RAV4 was driven by 26-year-old Derek Johnston. He stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.

Johnston was driving the same direction as Harrington when he clipped the bike's rear wheel, toppling Harrington, Lt. King said. He was given a citation for following too close.

Harrington was a star for the Ducks until his final season in 2001. His final year he was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy and led the team to a Fiesta Bowl victory. He played eight seasons in the NFL, although never found the same success in the pros as he had in college.

He was scheduled to play in the "Shake It Till We Make It" golf tournament on Monday, but did not make it because of his injuries. The tournament is a fundraiser for Brian Grant's foundation to help people suffering from Parkinson's disease.
