Move-in day on the University of Oregon campus

EUGENE, Ore. - Thursday is the first day of Madison Birdsall's college career.

The incoming Univesity of Oregon freshman from Issaquah, Wash., was moving into her dorm Thursday - along with thousands of other students.

"A little overwhelmed, a little scared, excited, mixed emotions," Birdsall said, "but it's going to be good."

"Nervous, sad," added Polly Birdsall, Madison's mom. "She's excited to go, she's ready to move on, fly the coop."

New students are moving into dorms on the University of Oregon campus Thursday - and they don't have a lot of time to it.

Students were assigned a block of time to check in and unload. Students and their families have 30 minutes to park, get keys, unload and then move their vehicle to a shuttle lot at Autzen Stadium. A free shuttle will bring students and parents back to campus to settle in.

The new system is part of an effort to alleviate the traffic congestion that comes with move-in day, when 4,000 new students arrive on campus.
