Charles Embleton is accused of faking cancer to gather donations.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - A man accused of faking cancer and taking thousands in charity from a business and his church made his first appearance in court Wednesday.

Charles Embleton faces a charge of first degree felony theft.

Police arrested Embleton after Papa's Pizza tipped them off about the possible fraud.

Investigators said Embleton raised about $5,000 but has no medical records that indicate he ever had cancer.

KVAL News asked Embleton after he arrest whether or not he has or had cancer.

"I don't really know how to respond to that," he said.

Embleton did not enter a plea at Wednesday's hearing.
