JOHN DAY, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police say a 48-year-old man suffered a leg wound in an apparently accidental shooting as he was elk hunting with his son and a friend in eastern Oregon.
Master Sgt. Gordon Larson said William Cearns of Mount Vernon, Ore., was driving an all-terrain vehicle carrying his 24-year-old son and a friend of his son when the ATV lost traction Monday on a snow-covered Forest Service road.
As the younger men got off to lighten the load, Larson says it appears that 24-year-old Jared Earnest's rifle discharged.
The bullet hit the ATV, then hit Cearns in his lower leg.
The injured man was treated at the scene, then taken to a hospital in John Day, Ore., where he was treated and released.
State troopers are continuing their investigation.
