BROWNSVILLE - A deputy-involved shooting in Brownsville has left one man dead.

The Linn County sheriff's department is still investigating, but this is what we can tell you right now.
It started when residents in Brownsville saw a man walking around town holding a shotgun, and called 9-1-1.
Moments later another call came in, saying the suspect was at a Chevron gas station.

"We got another call at 1:55 that it had moved over here to the gas station behind us and that it was a hostage situation," says Sheriff Tim Mueller with the Linn County Sheriff's office.

A Linn County swat team was called out to respond to the scene and a sergeant with Linn County sheriff's office responded right away.
That's when shots were exchanged.

"The suspect fired two shots from his shotgun. One in the direction of the deputy. He had the shotgun to the head of the female victim who was on the ground and the deputy returned fire," says Mueller.

When the suspect hit the ground, the hostage then was able to run to safety. The hostage and the deputy were not hurt.

We don't know the name of the victim but we know he's a Brownsville area resident, who's well known around the community.

In these circumstances, Linn County Sheriff's office will not be the agency investigating the case.

Instead, a team of detectives with Marion County sheriff's office are on the job. This was the first Linn County deputy involved shooting in nearly four years.
