R.V. lovers unite at the Lane County Fairgrounds

SOUTH EUGENE - Oregon's seasides, sand dunes and scenery draw people from all over, many of whom opt for automobiles over airplanes because for R.V. lovers, it's about the destination and the journey. One thing that draws people to these big rigs is that everyone can fit inside, so a vacation is always a family affair.

"We spend a lot of time together when we go to the coast riding," said Veneta Resident Kevin Maillard. "It's a lot of fun."

Recreational vehicle manufacturing is one of the largest employers in the area. And, experts are saying the fear of a recession doesn't mean it's the end of this employment era.

"It's an amazing employment base," said Oregon R.V. Show and Sale Event Producer Dave Weinkauf. "And, it does tend to ebb and flow. Right now they've squished a little bit. But, it will come back. It always does."

With gas prices on the rise, experts are saying the R.V. industry is weathering the economic storm with grace.

"The cost of gas is really a small part of the operation of an R.V. because really people use them for weekend primarily," said Weinkauf. "So, really gas prices aren't really a deterrent from people owning an RV and operating one."

One consulting firm says the pinch at the pump is felt more so in the cost of airline tickets. So, while it may cost thirty per cent more to fill up one of these huge tanks, it's still less than flying the friendly skies.

The R.V. show continues through Sunday.
