Oregon ACLU challenges Medford panhandling ordinance
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - A panhandling ordinance in Medford is being challenged by the American Civil Liberties Union.
The ACLU claims the city ordinance is unconstitutional because it restricts free speech. The lawsuit filed Thursday by the civil rights group argues the city of Medford cannot punish people simply for asking for a handout. The Medford City Council approved the ordinance last November on a 6-1 vote. Councilman John Statler was the only member to vote against it, warning the city could face a lawsuit like the one the ACLU filed. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
