ROSEBURG, Ore. - A Eugene man fell near the summit of Mount Thielsen on Sunday, breaking an arm and a leg and injuring his head, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said.

A helicopter from Brim Aviation delivered rescuers to the mountain to help Michael Hawley, 58. He was airlifted off the mountain by the Army National Guard, then taken by air ambulance to a hospital in Medford.

Hawley was with a group of hikers near the summit of Thielsen, dubbed "the lightning rod of the Cascades" for the summit's spire.

The call for help came in around 2:15 p.m.

Search and rescue teams from Douglas, Klamath and Jackson counties responded along with the Army National Guard, Brim Aviation, US Forest Service and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
