Northwest drivers get extension for tire studs

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - With winter weather persisting, Oregon and Washington drivers with studs on their tires will get four more days to remove them.

The Oregon Department of Transportation says the new deadline for removing the studs is April 5, the Saturday after next.

The department cites forecasts of slightly higher temperatures late in the weekend.

It says that might not give drivers enough time to get the tires off by the April 1, which is Tuesday.

It says Washington has made the same decision.

The Oregon department says drivers who don't go into the mountains should remove their studs early to prevent roadway damage.

Missing the deadline could result in a $145 fine.
