Comic Book Challenge: 24 hours, 24 pages

EUGENE, Ore. -- A group of amateur and professional cartoonists spent the last 24 hours frantically working to complete a fully illustrated comic book.

The University of Oregon art department hosted a 24-hour comic challenge, which started at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Over two dozen artists challenged themselves to write, draw, ink and letter an entire comic book – 24 pages in 24 hours.

Organizer Ken O'Connell welcomed special guest comic artist David Chelsea, who brought his expertise to the event.

“It’s very exciting to have a famous author and artist with us for the 24 hours,” said O’Connell. “Struggling with all of the things we're struggling with … to try to come up with the next frame and the next picture, the next idea."

The comic artists used colored pencils, pens, and even computers to complete their sketches.

O’Connel developed a wheel that helped keep everyone on their deadline. The artists chugged cafinated beverags and ate sugary snacks to work up to their deadline of 9 a.m. Sunday.
