18-year-old bicyclist hit and killed by freight train in Albany
Officials were at the railroad crossing near Queen Ave. and Pacific Blvd. for three hours after bicyclist was hit by a freight train.

ALBANY, Ore. -- A bicyclist was hit and killed by a freight train Friday afternoon while crossing the tracks near Downtown Albany, the city’s police department said.

Officials report that 18-year-old Joshua Lovato was crossing the tracks near Queen Ave. and Pacific Blvd. at 1:50 p.m. when he was struck by the northbound train.

Witnesses told police that Lovato was one of two people trying to cross the tracks after the crossing arms had lowered.

Officials said the conductor couldn’t avoid hitting Lovato and tried to stop the freight train as soon as possible.

Police reopened the track crossing at around 4:30 p.m. Friday. Union Pacific Railroad police are heading the investigation.
