Some Lane County voters may receive two ballots in the mail.

With recent surges in party affiliation changes, Annette Newingham, Lane County’s Elections Official, said some voters may receive two ballots if they submitted recent changes to their voter registration.

“This is the result of ballot preparation overlapping voter registration deadlines,” said Newingham.

Although this is not a new occurrence with this election, the changes in registration are expected to be higher than previous primary elections. There is a process in place for reissued ballots.  Lane County voters will receive a brightly colored yellow insert with the reissued ballot, with a yellow return identification envelope explaining the process and clearly stating it is against the law to vote two ballots.

Once a second ballot is reissued due to a change in residence address, mailing address, or party change elections officials follow the Oregon Vote-by-Mail manual as follows:

If the original ballot is returned by the voter, elections staff will duplicate and count the ballot only for eligible contests.

If the reissued ballot is returned by the voter, elections staff will count the ballot.

If voters have any questions as to why they received two ballots, or what they should do once received, they are encouraged to call Lane County Elections at 682-4234 prior to casting their ballots. Most important is to vote the ballot with the yellow return identification envelope with the corresponding ballot contents. Destroy any other ballots received for the same voter. A voter may not vote more than one ballot.

Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. On Election Day, May 20, 2008 the office will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
