Dogs kill alpaca, injure llama
By Laura RillosEUGENE, Ore. - As Judy Mitchell's llama Chief climbs to his feet, the scratches and dried blood tell the tale of what happened when two pit bulls got into this north Eugene pasture. Before the dogs went for Chief, they killed an alpaca grazing in the same field. "The slit his neck open and his eye," Mitchell said. "He was trying to breathe and just gurgling." Lane County Animal Services responded and later impounded the dogs. Under Lane County's proposed budget for 2008-2009, that service will go away May 26. Last year, animal services responded to 265 instances of dogs biting humans. They don't keep track of animal attacks on livestock. "I worry just as much about the animals of Lane County and the situations that could occur if LCAS goes away," said Tom Howard, supervisor at the agency. "They could be animals in danger, animal attacks on humans, they could be animals that just need our help, medical services." The Greenhill Humane Society said no one on staff is qualified to handle animal enforcement. |
