Alleged racy picture message causes concern
By Meghan KalksteinALBANY, Ore. - Some high school students may be using their cell phones for more than just making calls. West Albany High School officials said a racy picture created a buzz of criminal concern. At least one parent was upset that some student cell phones were searched by police. "I have pictures on my phone, and just some funny stuff," student Reilly Bryan said. Camera phones snap quick photos, but sometimes what you see and send through your phone could get you into trouble. Students said the picture spread from student to student through West Albany High School. "She sent it to a lot of people, then they forwarded it to more people and it turned into a big deal," said student Danielle Robertson. Jim Haggart of the Albany School District said the picture was of a girl under 18, which raised criminal concerns. But when the phones were brought on campus, Haggart said the school's resource officer searched at least two students phones. He said the district had their consent. "If a student shares something willingly or anybody shares something willingly then he doesn't need a warrant. But he does realize that you need a search warrant if a person does not give their consent," Haggart said. The officer never found the alleged images. "I heard a lot of the guys were going around telling people to delete them because they had sent it to a lot of guys," said student Megan Ohlings. |
