Letter carriers work to feed those in need

By Joe Raineri

Saturday is one of the busiest days of the year for letter carriers, but it's for a different reason than you might think.

While letter carriers were busy delivering the mail, they were also picking up food to feed those in need. All to stamp out hunger.

Letter carriers from coast to coast aren't just delivering bills, magazines and junk mail, they're helping those in need.

While residents pick up their mail, letter carriers are picking up yellow bags filled with food.

"Everyone just works together and just to collect all this food, it just gives you a really good feeling that your part of this food drive," says one local letter carrier.

"They hit low income people dis-proportionally In March, we had a ten percent increase in people coming in," says Mike Gibson, Director of Linn Benton Food Share.

While many out there are looking to put food on the tables for their families, the postal service is glad to be able to lift the spirits of those in need.

Gibson says he hoped to receive 75,000 pounds. That should be enough canned food to get his organization through the summer.

This is the 16th year that stamp out hunger has taken place across the country. Last year postal workers collected 70 million pounds of food.
