EUGENE, Ore. - The May 20 primary is critical for Eugene voters because it will determine if one or two names will be on the November general election ballot for Mayor.

Here's how it works:

As of now, there are four people left in the race for Eugene mayor. The candidates are Kitty Piercy, Jim Ray, Jim Torrey and Nick Urhausen.

The May 20 primary is so important because one of two things could happen. If no one wins a majority of the votes, the two candidates with the highest number of votes will go head to head in the general election. If one of the candidates receives 50 percent plus one vote, he or she will be the only name on the November ballot.

The Eugene City Recorder said it is very common to only have one mayoral candidate come November. According to city documents, only three times in the last 12 years has the race for mayor gone to a November runoff.
