EUGENE, Ore. - A tire-slashing spree in the West University neighborhood Friday afternoon damaged at least eight vehicles, police said.

Police responded at 12:45 p.m. to a report of a man behaving errtically and slashing vehicle tires with a knife. The suspect rode away on a bicycle while the 911 caller was on the phone reporting the situation.

Witnesses identified the man as 32-year-old Zachary David Eads. He was located and arrested later in the afternoon. Eads had been in custody Thursday on an unrelated charge but was released due to jail overcrowding.

After Friday’s arrest he was returned to the Lane County Jail on a felony charge of criminal mischief in the first degree.

Investigating officers located eight vehicles with slashed tires but believe there may have been more. Police are requesting that anyone whose vehicle was vandalized while parked in the area around 12th and Mill on Friday afternoon please report the crime by calling Eugene Police at (541) 682-5111.
