Hackers crack into OSU bookstore, steal credit card numbers
"They tried different attacks and our Web site evidently had one vulnerability in it," said General Manager Steve Eckrich.
The security breach isn't sitting well with students.
"I think it's pretty scary that it can get out there and other people can access your information," said student Sara Livesay.
Students said they checked their accounts to find out whether they were a victim of the attack.
"Everything is okay right now," said Lana Shindler.
The Web site has been shut down. But bookstore officials said they are taking steps to ensure that the next time you type in your credit card numbers into their Web site, it won't get into the wrong hands.
The bookstore has brought in an outside agency to do a security review.
"We'll be using their recommendations not only to solve that particular problem that was exploited but to add additional layers of security on top of that so that information is not exposed or cannot be exposed in the way that it was," said Eckrich.
Oregon State Police said they're pretty sure the thieves aren't connected to the university, but they still don't know how or who got a hold of the numbers.
In the mean time, police are saying the best thing you can do to protect yourself is always double check your credit card and bank statements and if you notice something fishy, call your financial institution.
