Accident on I-5 near Canyonville kills California man
CANYONVILLE -  An accident south of Canyonville this morning, killed one man and sent another to the hospital.

Oregon State Police said a GMC Sierra pickup with California license plates,was northbound near the top of Canyon Mountain, when the pickup slammed into the back of a loaded log truck that was parked along the side of the freeway.

A passenger, 47-year-old Miguel Manuel Favela from Pasadena, California died at the scene.  The driver, 55-year-old Sevando Lopez Castillo also of Pasadena, was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg where he was treated and was treated and released.

Police said Lopez Castillo apparently fell asleep and drifted onto the right shoulder crashing into the parked truck, just before 6:00 o'clock this morning. Officers said the truck was parked and was legally lighted when the accident happened.

The logs which were headed from Butte Falls to Dillard, had to be off-loaded and hauled away on another trailer

The driver of the log truck, 59-year-old John Bartlett of Grants Pass, hauling for Swanson Group, was not injured.

Traffic was down to one lane for several hours while police investigated the accident.

The investigation is continuing.
