2 hurt in Coos Bay shop explosion

COOS BAY, Ore. -- Authorities say two people were injured after an explosion in a shop east of Coos Bay on Saturday afternoon.

Deputies were called to a reported explosion in a shop building at 64558 Donovan's Drive.

When deputies arrived they found two males lying on the ground being helped by family members.

Officials say Kyle Kaufmann, 23, and Jacob Sweider, 17, both of Coos Bay, had been starting to work on a Jeep in the shop building.

Richard Sweider, the father of the 17-year-old had opened the shop doors, removed gas tanks and thought the area was well ventilated.

Deputies say that When one of the males lit off a cutting torch, there was a flash explosion from the fumes.

Both Kaufmann and Sweider were transported to Bay Area Hospital for treatment.

There was no resulting fire due to the explosion.
