Farmers fight hay truck fire

The fire was quickly contained in a well-established fashion: by the farmers who live in the area. "There are some people who live in the area here who are outside of the fire protection," explained Rosetta Venell from Venell Farms. "When there's a fire in the community, the phone rings and alerts the neighbor. "We're a long way from the fire department to start with," Venell said. "It's just been that way forever, and that's just the way we've still chosen to do it." That was the case last Sunday when a downed powerline sparked a fire in an unharvested grass seed field. "On Sunday, there were 14 trucks there, probably 10 different farmers," Venell said. The quick response limited the fire to 8 acres. The neighbors came to the rescue again Tuesday morning when they fought the hay truck blaze. A KVAL.com YouNewsTV reporter "desertrattim" submitted photographs of the fire Tuesday afternoon. Venell said the farm used to burn fields but doesn't anymore. They've kept up their firefighting equipment and training, however, for events like this week's fires. A report of the truck fire came in to the Benton County Sheriff's dispatch at 10:18 a.m. and deputies were on the scene minutes later, according to Peggy Peirson with the sheriff's office. She said members of the Corvallis Fire Department responded to the fire, too. The truck was a total loss, Peirson said. The fire burned the truck and spread burning hay on the road. Venell wasn't sure about all of the farms involved in fighting the fire. From Venell Farms, firefighters included Pete Gilbert, Gary Boertje, Chris Venell, Larry Venell (shown in photo above), Bill Gangestad, Jeremy Whitby, Mike New and Ed Darden.
