Man charged with killing woman with rock before fleeing on mountain bike
By Kim QuinteroSPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Court papers filed this week revealed new details about the gruesome murder of a Springfield woman. Tricia Jo Meadows, 53, was found dead in her apartment in January. An autopsy showed she died from blunt force trauma to the head. Two days later, police arrested Carl Lee Meadows on a parole violation. He has now been charged with Tricia's murder. Court documents outline how the officer believes Tricia was murdered and a possible motive behind the crime. "I saw Ms. Meadows body lying on a reclining chair in the living room. There was obvious trauma to her head and a large rock resting on her left shoulder," said Officer David Lewis. Lewis walked in on a grisly scene one cold January day inside the apartment on J Street after a Lane County Mental Health Employee found Tricia's body. "There was a large amount of blood visible on the recliner and floor, as well as what appeared to be blood spattering on the ceiling above the body," said Lewis. The murder had a community searching for answers. "We haven't seen her for four or five, almost six days, so we were wondering what was going on," Neighbor Ljubo Kvesic said back in January. Then police made an arrest: Carl Lee Meadows was taken into custody for Tricia's murder. Tricia's son, Mike Stanley, said he's still questioning the relationship between Carl and his mother. "None of the family really knows. He claimed he was related, I believe, like a second cousin," said Stanley. Officer Lewis offers a possible motive behind the murder. The day Carl was arrested, his friend, Lana Lowder, went searching for him. That's when authorities caught up with her. Lowder told police Carl confessed to killing Tricia before fleeing the scene on a mountain bike. "Because he perceived that Tricia Meadows had got her fired from her job as an apartment manager," said Lewis. "She tried to find the good in everybody and there are just some people that don't have any good in them," said Stanley. Carl Meadow's trial is scheduled for Sept. 30. |
