Rising rent and big box stores hurt Main Street hardware store
By Meghan KalksteinSPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Some small businesses in our area are struggling to survive in a tough economy. One long time shop in Springfield is now the latest victim of the economic downturn. The managers of B and I hardware location on Main Street in Springfield said rising rent, dips in business and even pressure from big box stores is why they're calling it quits. Now you can add B and I hardware to the list of ma and pa stores ringing up purchases for the last go-round. "They have no idea how hard it is for us to do this," said store manager J.K. Krowka. Krowka says after more than 20 years selling specialty hardware in Springfield, they're pulling the plug for a number of reasons. "The main kicker though was a severe increase in rent by the owners of the property," Krowka said. "It was about $3,000 a month." Customers now are going to big box stores for a quick sale, according to B and I employees. "Quite honestly we lost a lot of business to those bigger box stores.," Krowka said. "But when you go into some of them, you get a visual eye bath of products, but the perception that they're cheaper is only an illusion." Some customers say they're running out of these unique places to shop. "It's really sad because I think the mom and pop stores should really be supported," said customer Madeliene Marcotte. The manager said he's not sure how many job will be lost. He did say some employees will work out of their Junction City location, which will remain open. |
