Device guards against gas-siphoning thieves

EUGENE, Ore. - It's loud, obnoxious and almost deafening, but Jason Quiring said the crazy cacophony may be the solution to greedy gas grabbers.

"I came up with the gas tank alarm," said Quiring.

Here's how it works: You turn the alarm on. Walk away and do whatever you need to do. If anyone tries to open your gas tank while the alarm is on, you know what happens next.

Quiring came up with the idea after local law enforcement became the latest victims of siphoning.

"Several months ago one of the Eugene Police cars had gas siphoned out of the police car, and I was reading the newspaper and I thought we could come up with an invention to solve this problem," said Quiring.

So what's to prevent someone from just ripping the alarm off the tank?

"Somebody would be welcome to rip it off," said Quiring, "but the alarm is still going to go off, and they're not going to want to be anywhere near that alarm. They're going to run away.

Quiring's new invention is causing quite a buzz and he said he hopes the simple technology ends up on gas tanks everywhere.
