Portland mulls posting calories on menus
By Laura RillosEUGENE, Ore. -- How many calories are in your burger? What about your latte? Do you ever want to know? The next time you're in Portland, you could find out. Multnomah County commissioners are considering requiring some chain restaurants to post calorie counts on the menu. The proposal would affect chains with more than 15 locations, like McDonald's and McMenamins. Eugene residents had mixed reaction. "I would like to know because I was a fat little kid and so I like to keep track of what I eat so I don't end up a big fat old lady," said Darcy Cresswell. "I don't know. I think it's a concern a lot of people have so maybe it's cool but it's not something I would care about," said Aaron Kimball. Some national chains like Starbucks already provide the information on brochures available in stores, so the move to menus would be easy. Critics say local chains will have a difficult time paying for the calorie calculations and menu updates. In Eugene, Cafe Yumm plans to have nutrition facts on their website and in restaurants by the end of the year. Gatherting the info has taken months. "For this, just the programming portion of it is five thousand dollars," said Mark Beauchamp, president of Cafe Yumm. "Then there's the gathering of the information which is a separate cost." Beauchamp says calories don't provide the full story. "Nutritional labels provide a very small portion of what whole foods really offer." Multnomah County commissioners vote of the proposal July 31. There has been no official discussion of any calorie counting proposals in Lane County. |
