MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) -- Doctors and family members say the surgery performed on state Sen. Jason Atkinson to repair damage to his right leg was a success.

Atkinson is a Republican who ran for governor in 2006.

During almost three hours of surgery Monday, doctors put two plates in his leg to support the femur, said brother Andy Atkinson.

Jason Atkinson could be in rehabilitation by the end of the week, his brother said.

In the July 29 accident, Atkinson dropped a sack containing a .38-caliber derringer on his garage floor. It discharged, sending a bullet into his right leg above the knee.

The bag and gun were attached to a bike belonging to Bill Leep, a Jacksonville city councilman who had taken the bike to Atkinson for repairs.
