SCIO, Ore. - The Linn County Sheriff's Office is investigating a case involving some severely malnourished horses.

On a patch of land in Scio, there are seven horses trying to survive off less than two acres of dry grass and weeds.

Four of the strongest horses are doing fine but there are three weaker ones that are not getting enough food.

Wayne Geiger, the director of Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary (a non-profit group that rescues farm animals), has seen the horses and said two of them are critically malnourished and that one is even suffering from a skin infection called 'rain rot.'

"My opinion - if they don't get some care soon, they will not be in good enough condition to survive the winter," he said.

The owner of the property, who does not own the horses, became increasingly concerned for their health and notified a neighbor.  It was then that law enforcement became involved and Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary made an offer to help.

"If he surrenders them to us, we're happy to take them," Geiger said.  "There's no charge. That's what we do."

According to the Linn County Sheriff's Office, all parties are fully cooperating with investigators.  Their names are being withheld due to the ongoing investigation.
