EUGENE, Ore. - Thieves are using shaved keys to break into cars in Lane County. It's a trick police said has been around for years. They don't want us to say how they're made for safety reasons but they look like a really worn down key.

Car manufacturers have spent the last10 or so years improving the way a key is made. Police said that's helped cut down on some thefts, but not all.

"With the shaved keys, there's not a lot of ways to stop that particular part of theft unless you are going to put some type of security system on your vehicle," said Detective Dennis Doe with the Eugene Police Department.

The best way to prevent falling victim to car crime won't cost you a dime: Keep valuables away from where thieves can see them.

But it's also important to hide everything before you even get to your destination.

Police said thieves stake out parking lots and look for people putting pricey property in their trunk.
