A Brookings-Harbor man received minor injuries Tuesday morning when an unidentified animal bit and scratched him on a remote mountain road just outside Brookings. He was treated at a medical clinic and released the same morning.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Oregon State Police and United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services responded immediately. Although hound dogs and other methods were used, the animal has not been found.

“We’re still investigating the incident,” said Mark Vargas, ODFW’s Rogue Watershed Wildlife Biologist. “It is unclear what kind of animal it was, but current evidence indicates it was not a large carnivore.”

ODFW encourages people who work and recreate in forested areas to know how to respond when encountering wild animals. More information is on the Department’s Web site.
