Is some tween apparel too risque?
By Elissa Harrington
SPRINGFIELD - Mini skirts, short shorts, spaghetti straps, and sparkly tops are among just some back to school clothing for kids and tweens. It might have some parents asking, is my child dressing like a kid, or a rock star?
Clothing by lines for Hannah Montana and Avril Lavigne are must haves on many lists but while those girls are on stage, girls we talked to will be in class. This puts some parents and kids at odds about what is appropriate at school. We found Tracy O'neil shopping with her 9-year-old niece Chyanne. O'Neil works at a local elementary school and says some of the revealing fashions concern her. "When they're dressing sexy it's not cute anymore," she says. "Especially when you think of all the pedophiles living on street corners." 9-year old Chyanne says today's pop styles can put lots of pressure on young girls. "It's kind of weird because you want to be like Hannah Montana because she's really really cool," she says. "But then you see her in really short skirts and you're like, whoa." So are kids dressing too old for their age? Or is this type of clothing just the look of the new age? Either way, parents should make sure to check with their child's school to find out what they are and are not allowed to wear. |
