Animal thefts prompt local shelters to review security

EUGENE, Ore. - Ryan Doak already misses his best buddy, a dark mut named Huckleberry. Ryan's mom, Shannon is doing her best to console him.

"He cried and said, 'I want huckleberry back,'" said Shannon Doak.

Huckleberry was killed after thieves stole 11 dogs from a shelter in Josephine County.

Here in Eugene, if criminals were to break into Lane County Animal Services, they would have to pass through a breezeway to get to the cattery and to where the dogs are. The whole area is locked, all the doors and gates equipped with pad locks and alarms. That means the criminal would be stuck there until police arrived.

There's a similar system at Greenhill Humane Society. But Greenhill also has cameras. Even though both local shelters say they're safe, Greenhill might soon have even more security. That's in direct response to the crime in Josephine County.

"We are going through and looking to ensure that things that happen at Josephine County here," said Greenhill Executive Director Cary Lieberman.

There is a slight silver lining to this horrific crime. Two of the stolen dogs have been found safe, and two people have been arrested.

Break-ins at the Josephine County Animal Shelter are nothing new. There have been six this year alone. The shelter said that's because their budget has been cut in half.
