CORVALLIS, Ore. -- A bomb squad secured a grenade left on the porch of a Corvallis apartment, and police later arrested a man who told them he thought it was harmless and had bought it for $5.

Police arrested Stephen Surdyka and charged him with disorderly conduct.

Surdyka told polce he purchased the grenade earlier in the day from a homeless male for $5 and did not believe it was in working condition, according to a police press release.

Corvllis police reduced traffic to one lane in the 300 block of SW 4th Street for security while the Oregon State Police Bomb Squad responded. The bomb squad secured the device and removed it from the scene.

The hand grenade was inert and appears to have merely been the outer metal casing with no apparent explosive material or fuse/detonator present, according to police.
