EUGENE, Ore. -- The non-fatal shooting of a man by sheriff's deputies Monday coincided with the first day of a new state-mandated review process for the use of deadly force by law enforcement officers.

The Lane County Interagency Deadly Force Investigations Team will investigate Monday's shooting.

Deputies responded to a report of a suicidal person armed with a firearm.

Nathan Dix, 31, pointed a firearm in the direction of the deputies. As the deputies were directing Dix to put the firearm down, Dix fired the firearm toward the deputies, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputy Greg Jones and Deputy Todd Olson returned fire, striking Dix.

Dix was given immediate on-scene medical aid by deputies until an ambulance arrived. He was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center where he is receiving continued treatment for his injuries.

The incident is being investigated by members of the Oregon State Police, Eugene Police, Springfield Police, Lane County District Attorney’s Office and the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.

The Lane County Deadly Physical Force Plan can be viewed on-line at the Lane County Sheriff’s Office Web site at the following address: http://www.lanecounty.org/Sheriff/documents/SB111WebReady.pdf

The team was created in response to a law passed by the 2007 Legislature. The team was scheduled to be implemented for all Lane County incidents of the use of deadly physical force by an officer on Sept. 1, 2008.

The team is comprised of 10 experienced investigators from the various Lane County law enforcement agencies.

The team will investigate Monday's incident, where deputies returned fire after a subject refused to drop his weapon and instead fired at deputies.

The purpose of the team is to provide for a consistent response to an officer’s use of deadly physical force that treats the law enforcement officer fairly and promotes public confidence in the criminal justice system, according to the sheriff's office.

The team conducts a criminal investigation to determine the presence or absence of criminal activity as a result of the use of deadly physical force by the officer or to determine the presence of criminal activity by any other person associated with the incident, according to the sheriff's office.
