EUGENE, Ore. -- Fenario Gallery hosts a solo exhibit of new works by former Eugene resident Steven Lopez, also known by the grafitti name Frustr8. The show will feature recent works on canvas by Lopez as well as a limited duration installation piece, the material costs of which were underwritten by the Lane Arts Council.

His work features vibrant colors, sometimes depicting pop culture figures. He has filmed himself painting in time lapse, like in the video below.

Lopez lived and worked in Eugene for several years, earning a degree in fine art from the University of Oregon. Before moving to Los Angeles, Lopez completed several local murals, including the Le Petit Gourmet mural at 26th and Willamette.

He was part of the 2000 Lane Arts Council project ArtWall, in which he mentored and guided a group of local youths in the design and execution of a downtown mural near Shoe-A-Holic.

The opening reception will take place Friday and feature the unveiling of his publicly funded installation piece. The event will also feature a performance by DJ Matt Nelkin as well as refreshments and a question and answer session with the artist.

The gallery also hosts a Sept. 24 public forum about public art and Lopez's continued work with youth through art.

The upcoming exhibit has attracted some controversy, according to YouNews reporter Chloe G, due to online debates about one of Lopez's images used on the cover of Eugene Weekly (at left). The free weekly featured an interview with Lopez.
